Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you’re near one), at home or a bit of both, it’s up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that’s all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you’ll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

We’re looking to grow the team to continue to scale the impact of machine learning across Canva. You’ll be joining a fast-moving cross-functional team, rapidly building and shipping machine learning-driven features to users and staff.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

• You will lead and coach a single team of 6-8 engineers, by providing regular, practical feedback and collaboratively help them reach their personal growth goals
• You will be accountable for team delivery and ongoing delivery improvements
• You will shape the roadmap in collaboration with product, balancing product outcomes with pragmatic technical excellence
• You will contribute to the technical strategy of the team
• You will be a hands-on leader contributing directly to progressing goals with code

You’re probably a match if

• Experience of leading teams of software engineers and leading leaders contributing to company-critical goals and strategies.
• Focussed on the backend technology and system design, ideally with experience in Java and AWS
• Experience of bringing up new platform initiatives and seeing it through end-to-end.
• Ability to lead by example; promoting value of ownership and bias for actions.
• Experience working cross-functionally with Product Managers, Designers, and other business functions outside of engineering.
• You will own the team’s development methodology and rituals such as sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives
• Embed best practices into our development processes, helping improve processes, tools and ways of working
• You will write and review design documents, break projects down into milestones, and be responsible for project delivery

We are about to split the team into two, and as the lead of one of them, you will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge natural language understanding system that seamlessly integrates into Canva, enhancing the user experience and making their creative journey even more enjoyable.

We are proud to have recently released a milestone of our LLM-powered help system, and we are about to release the 2nd – but that’s just the beginning.
